Is Gluten Free Scanner really free?
Yes! Scanning is completely free with no account and no registration. There is an optional Premium subscription that adds Offline Mode and Scan History and removes our own prompts about Premium, but you can scan products forever without paying a penny. We do not show third-party adverts to anyone.
How does it know if a product is gluten-free?
Gluten Free Scanner uses a mixture of AI and human verification. AI reads each product's ingredients and allergen information and classifies whether it contains gluten. The data comes from Open Food Facts, the open food database, and from photos of real packaging sent in by the app's community. Our team reviews contributions, and when the AI is not confident enough to call a product gluten-free, the app errs on the side of caution instead of guessing.
Are results checked by real people?
It is a mixture of both. Results are produced automatically by AI, and real people keep the data honest: the community has sent in over 130,000 product submissions and photos, and when a result is reported as wrong a person reviews and corrects the record - with priority given to anything shown as safe when it is not. When the AI cannot confidently read a new product's label, the product waits for our team to review it before it appears for everyone - and when the AI is not sure about gluten, it never marks a product safe. Most individual records are not hand-checked before you see them, which is why you should always read the label as well.
Is it suitable for people with coeliac disease?
Yes - it is built for people with coeliac disease and it is deliberately caution-first. A product is never marked gluten-free unless the AI is confident, uncertain products err toward 'contains gluten', and reported mistakes are corrected by our team. It is a guide, not a medical device: recipes change and automated systems make mistakes, so always check the packaging before you buy or eat something.
How many products are covered?
Over 3 million products from grocery stores across North America, Europe, Australia and beyond, updated daily. The database is built from Open Food Facts, the open food database, and it grows every day as the community photographs missing products - tens of thousands of products have been added from user photos.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Offline Mode is a Premium feature that downloads the database to your phone so you can scan anywhere, which is perfect for travel, camping, or areas with poor signal. The app syncs automatically when you are back online.
